In summer 2014, The Link provided Circus, Drama and Art workshops that took place in the backyard of the Link building. The project was so successful that we decided to develop an even bigger project for this summer of 2015. The project was led by our Art Psychotherapist and had a wide range of artists offering artistic workshops to help and support young people with an interest in the arts.
All groups explored the project theme ‘Tomorrow’ and worked towards a performance on 18th July at Earthbeat Centre, Saltburn, where all groups will perform or exhibit their art form. This video formed part of the presentations and gives just a little insight into the skill and talent that we found!
Well done guys!!
The project worked with 165 Year 5 children from four schools, residing within an area badly affected by job losses at the time, i.e. closure of SSI Steelworks and job losses at Boulby Mine. Over a 12 week period the children explored their own strengths, fears, confidence and worries, enabling them to reflect upon their own and others feelings, and the link between thoughts and feelings. Analysis of the children showed a c.20% improvement in their ability to deal with tricky situations, as a result of the project. In addition, the project utilised art as the primary method of engaging with the children and consequently they learnt new skills in music, dance, art, drama and film-making, culminating in a celebration event, where the children presented the skills learned.
